At Luxulyan School, our Reception curriculum is built on the belief that 100% of learners are entitled to an exceptional educational experience. Our Reception curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced to ensure every child develops the knowledge, skills, vocabulary and confidence needed to flourish both now and in the future. 

Our curriculum is built around the principle of curriculum entitlement. Every child, regardless of their starting point or individual needs, is entitled to a rich, knowledge-based curriculum and exceptional learning experiences. While children may access learning in different ways and make progress at different rates, our ambition remains the same for every learner. 

Learning begins with what is familiar to children before gradually broadening their understanding of themselves, their local community, Modern Britain and the wider world. Through six enquiry-based themes, carefully chosen high-quality texts, Drawing Club, nursery rhymes, mathematical learning, expressive arts, physical development, outdoor learning and purposeful play, children develop secure knowledge, ambitious vocabulary and a lifelong love of learning. 

We recognise that learning is strengthened through positive relationships and meaningful connections with families, our local community and the wider world. Our curriculum reflects the unique context of Luxulyan, placing our school at the heart of the community by celebrating Cornwall's language, heritage, environment and local partnerships, helping children develop a strong sense of identity, belonging and place. 

Our curriculum is underpinned by ‘The Luxulyan Way’. We want every child to become Ready to learn, Respectful of themselves, others and the world around them, and Safe as they grow in confidence, independence and resilience. 

We also want children to understand that they can make a positive difference to their classroom, their community and the wider world through kindness, responsibility and active participation.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge, vocabulary and skills build progressively throughout the year. New learning is introduced through high-quality adult-led teaching before being revisited, practised, applied and deepened through purposeful continuous provision. 

Continuous provision is an integral part of our curriculum, not an addition to it. Carefully planned enhancements enable children to consolidate learning, make meaningful connections and become increasingly independent as they apply new knowledge and skills across different contexts. 

Knowledge is deliberately revisited throughout the year to strengthen children's long-term memory and help them make meaningful connections between new learning and what they already know. 

Language underpins every aspect of our curriculum. Adults explicitly teach and model ambitious vocabulary, engage children in sustained conversations and provide frequent opportunities for children to explain, describe, question, reason and reflect. 

Early reading is taught through the Read Write Inc. systematic synthetic phonics programme. Daily phonics lessons develop children's phonological awareness, decoding skills, fluency and confidence as readers. Alongside this, our carefully curated reading spine of high-quality texts, Drawing Club and nursery rhymes foster a lifelong love of reading, storytelling and language. 

Children experience a broad and balanced curriculum enriched through mathematics, music, poetry, art, cooking, educational visits, visitors, outdoor learning and seasonal experiences. These carefully planned opportunities ensure every child benefits from an exceptional educational experience that extends beyond the classroom and strengthens their connection with the local community. 

Assessment is an integral part of daily teaching. Staff continually observe, listen, question and interact with children to understand what they know, what they can do and what they are ready to learn next. Curriculum-specific assessment systems, including Read Write Inc. assessments and small-step progression trackers for mathematics, writing, letter formation and physical development, enable staff to identify next steps quickly and accurately. 

These assessments directly inform our weekly ‘Daily 100% Planner’, ensuring interventions, targeted support, adaptations and appropriate challenge are carefully planned for every learner. Assessment is used to improve learning, not simply to record attainment, enabling all children to make strong progress from their individual starting points while maintaining consistently high expectations. 

The values of ‘The Luxulyan Way’ are woven throughout daily routines, continuous provision and adult interactions, helping children learn to work collaboratively, care for others, take appropriate risks in their learning and develop increasing independence. 

The impact of our curriculum is evident in children who are confident, curious, resilient and enthusiastic learners. They leave Reception with secure foundations in communication and language, early reading, writing and mathematics, together with the personal, social and physical skills that prepare them well for Key Stage 1. 

Children demonstrate increasing independence and resilience. They communicate using an increasingly rich vocabulary, apply their knowledge in different contexts, make meaningful connections between areas of learning and show genuine curiosity about the world around them. 

Our responsive approach to assessment ensures children receive the right support, challenge and intervention at the right time. As a result, children make strong progress from their individual starting points while experiencing the full breadth and ambition of our curriculum. 

Children leave Reception as confident, curious and independent learners who are Ready for the next stage of their education, Respectful of themselves, others and the world around them, and able to make Safe and responsible choices. 

They understand that they are valued members of their school and local community and are beginning to recognise how their actions can positively contribute to the lives of others. 

Most importantly, every child leaves Reception having experienced the full entitlement of an exceptional education. They have listened to wonderful stories, explored the natural world, celebrated Cornwall's unique heritage, developed meaningful relationships, expressed themselves creatively, solved problems, asked questions and discovered the joy of learning.
